Celebrating the life of

Nell Futrelle Bainbridge

Passed away on September 24, 2017

Nell Futrelle Bainbridge

Nell Futrelle Bainbridge of Atlanta, Georgia (formerly of Savannah, Georgia) passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home at Kings Bridge on Sunday, September 24, 2017, at the age of ninety-seven. Nell was a true Savannah Southern lady and always had an open door for friends, friends of her children, and later, friends of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Everyone who knew her loved her and felt unconditionally loved by her, as she never failed to put others ahead of herself. She was a loving caregiver to her husband of sixty-four years. She was extraordinarily particular and had a spunky manner of ensuring that things were always exactly like she wanted them. Nell was always stylish and rarely left the house without her pearls. She loved to play the piano and listen to many types of music ranging from light classical and hymns to popular Christian music. She was also a talented seamstress. Perhaps most importantly, she always had a rock-solid faith in Jesus and was known to be a strong prayer warrior.

Nell was born in Savannah, Georgia to Almon U. and Georgia H. Futrelle, the youngest of five girls. She graduated from Savannah High School and married Herbert B. Bainbridge, Jr. on June 12, 1939. They relocated to Atlanta in 1955. She went to work for C&S Bank as a teller in 1962 and worked her way up to loan officer, the position she held when she retired in 1982. She and Herb attended Morningside Baptist Church for many years before becoming active members at Briarlake Baptist Church (“Briarlake’), where she was a member of the Beacon Sunday School Class. She also enjoyed being a member of the Briarpatch Garden Club and Garden Arts Club. After retirement, she enjoyed travelling with her beloved husband. They visited many destinations around Europe as well as Hawaii and Alaska. When she was not travelling, she volunteered for many years with Meals on Wheels, DeKalb Medical Center Auxiliary (Pink Ladies), and various ministries at Briarlake, including the homebound ministry. Briarlake recognized her many years of ministry service as a “Celebrating the Faithful” award recipient.

Nell is survived by two daughters, Nancy B. Pressley (Ralph) and Lynn B. Horton (Arthur), as well as six grandchildren, Beth P. Kendrick (David), Amy P. McCarthy (Corin), Matthew T. Bearden, Jeffery R. Horton (Rebecca), Melissa B. Foster (Jacob) and Lindsay H. Allen (Chad). She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren.

Nell was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Bartholomew Bainbridge, Jr., and her daughter, Deborah B. Bearden, as well as her four sisters, Josie Goode (Martin), Cler Doty (Wyly), Alice DeMerritt (Bill) and Athelia Futrelle.

A gift in her memory may be made to Briarlake Baptist Church, 3715 LaVista Road, Decatur, Georgia 30033.

The burial will be in Savannah on Thursday, September the 28th in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery at 11 AM. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, September 30th, at Briarlake Baptist Church in Decatur, Georgia at 11 AM with a reception to follow.

GUEST BOOK

I just realized Nell passed away when my Christmas Letter was returned yesterday. She and my Mother were friends many years. They are joined in heaven now with their loving husbands cheering the Bulldogs on.

- Sheran and Tom Proctor, North Augusta, South Carolina 29860, SC

My condolences to the Bainbridge family for the loss of your dear loved one. I hope you find comfort from these scriptures: 2 Corinthians 1: 3,4. Revelations 21:3,4. John 5:28,29. Psalms 37:29. Isaiah 25:8

- Holland, ,

I am sorry for your loss. Death is painful to all of us. However God's word the Bible always offers encouragement. A scripture I find comforting is Isaiah 25:8. There Jehovah promises to do away with death and all things that bring us pain. That will be very satisfying! I hope this thought has been comforting to you. May positive thoughts fill you hearts and minds as you endure this difficult time.

- R.G., ,

Surely Moses of antiquity had beautiful people like Miss Nell in mind when he said, "In themselves the days of our years are seventy years; and if because of SPECIAL MIGHTINESS they are eighty years." A long life is not what makes life meaningful, but it is what we do with it and who we share it with that does. And certainly her many "crowns", or grand and great-grandchildren, shared in making her life a joy to live. Continue to keep her memory active in your lives and please accept our deepest sympathies in your time of mourning. - The Brennans

- The Brennans , Decatur , Ga

Ninety-seven, what a blessing, extra mightiness. I can appreciate how active she was and her love of spiritual things. May God sustain you at this time of such great loss.

Please accept my condolences. I am sorry for your loss. May your family be comforted by the promise at Acts 24:15, where God promises to resurrect those that have fallen asleep in death.

- Tamara Edwards, ,

My sincerest condolences go out to your family, it's never easy losing someone in death. May you take comfort in God's promise found at Revelation 21:4, which says "he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” This verse brought me peace when I experienced loss, I hope it can do the same for you. May the memories you have give you strength during this difficult time.
